BEAR AWARENESS

Living in bear country.

Being bear aware starts at home! We have a big population of bears that live around Revelstoke and it’s our responsibility to live alongside them safely. Follow these basic rules to keep our community safe and our bears wild.

Most importantly, please take the time to educate yourself and your family on bear safety.

1.

Secure your garbage, foodwaste and recycling.

All smells mean food to a bear. Keep garbage and waste in bear-proof containers or inside your home until collection day. Know the city bylaws!

2.

Don’t use bird feeders when bears are active.

Bears are drawn to high calorie seeds and sugary humming bird feeders. Remove bird feeders during the spring, summer, and fall months.

3.

Keep petfood and livestock feed securely indoors.

Store pet food and livestock feed where bears can’t see or smell it. Feed animals in single portions. Secure beehives and animal attractants.

4.

Clean grills and smokers thoroughly after each use.

Ensure all grease, fat and burned food is removed after use. Keep your grill covered and consider an electric fence for overnight smoking.

5.

Manage compost properly, harvest all ripe fruit and windfalls.

Make sure all fruit is harvested or take advantage of our Gleaning Project. Properly managed compost is not an attractant, it should not smell.

Neighbourhood safety.
